A day later, the department said, investigators developed a possible reason for arresting Stephanie Whitney, 58, on suspicion of murdering Cox.
She is reportedly a homeless woman.
According to Phoenix Police, Whitney is caught on a surveillance video outside the gas station that Cox is attacking with his car. Investigators say a second man was seen on a video going through Cox’s pockets before a third person drives off in his car.
There is no clear link between Cox and Whitney.
A GoFundMe was set up to cover Cox’s memorial expenses https://gofund.me/875c0f00
“It’s unbelievable that someone should ruthlessly murder my father in cold blood …” reads part of the GoFundMe set up by Cox’s son Herbert McClain.
McClain lives out of state and is still grappling with news of his father’s death.
“To know that someone went out of their way to kill them is just indescribable. I can’t explain how I feel.” McClain said.
Cox is remembered as a family man who enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren.
“There’s no justification for killing someone … you can’t justify that. Even if you answer the questions, it can’t bring your life back,” his son said.
Whitney’s bond is $ 1 million.
