Authorities also picked up a Rugar .380 from Martin, in addition to an extra magazine and ammo box.

Records show Nelson approached Martin, who was sitting on the city path, and asked him to stay back because she had a gun. Nelson reached behind his back and said he had a gun too.

Martin is said to have perceived Nelson as a threat.

Martin told an officer she believed her ghost sent Nelson to harm her, according to the likely cause statement. She also reportedly told an officer that she was “Mary, the mother of Jesus, and her children are also Adam and Eve.”

The likely cause statement suggests that Nelson tried to take the gun out of Martin’s hand, but it eventually freed itself and walked away when the man began to follow her. Authorities claim Martin then turned and fired two rounds that hit Nelson in the chest.

After Nelson fell to the ground, Martin returned to the entrance, reloaded the gun, and waited five to ten minutes to make sure Nelson didn’t follow her, authorities said.

Officials eventually pronounced Nelson dead at the scene and retrieved two spent grenade casings near the body.

After the shooting, Walmart employees reported to authorities that they had not heard the gunshots and were standing outside the store during a break when Martin approached them. The police report shows that they ran to the store entrance and told a manager who then called 911.
