As National Parks and Recreation Month begins, the city invites residents to learn about park and recreational programs and services, and to meet some of the team through a series of videos and posts that air on the city’s social media channels .
July has been Parks and Recreation Month since 1985. A National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) initiative celebrates the month the various programs, parks and staff that contribute to a high quality of life in Yuma.
The department for parks and leisure offers programs from team and individual sports to pottery lessons, from senior billiards to activities for the little ones. The department is also responsible for the maintenance of playgrounds, swimming pools, sports fields, golf courses, the civic center, the art center, and everything from open spaces to facilities and the trees around them. From the open recreation areas of the West Wetlands to the hillside path of Smucker Park, Parks and Recreation has places for everything from an active lifestyle to pure relaxation.
The first social media feature features Parks and Recreation Director Jason Nau introducing Parks and Recreation Month and previewing other posts in the series. Residents can now view it on Yuma City’s Facebook page, Instagram feed, and LinkedIn page.
“Throughout this month we will be highlighting the people within the department, activities and programs we offer, and announcing exciting future opportunities that are on our calendar,” said Nau.
Subsequent videos and posts will introduce the Arts and Culture Department, Desert Hills Golf Course, Recreational Programs, Yuma Civic Center, and two different members of the Parks Maintenance Department.
“Getting out of COVID has been difficult, but it’s also been very exciting because we’re here to make sure your summer, fall and beyond are great,” said Nau.
This year’s theme is “Our Park and Rec Story”. The city and the NRPA invite residents to share their park and leisure history through their own social media and explain why their local park and leisure professionals matter to them. Those who do can use the hashtag #OurParkAndRecStory.
