Join AZCIR o for a discussion about the vital role independent journalism plays in reclaiming community narratives in an age of mis- and disinformation. You’ll hear from featured guest speaker Richard Stengel, former managing editor of TIME Magazine and Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs in the Obama administration, in a candid conversation with AZCIR founder Brandon Quester. They’ll discuss the national and local impact of misinformation on democracy and free speech, and how independent newsrooms like AZCIR are filling critical gaps in accountability reporting to help set the record straight. Richard Stengel is a journalist, New York Times bestselling author and outspoken advocate for democratic ideals and freedom of speech. He previously served as managing editor of TIME Magazine and president/CEO of the National Constitution Center before a career in government as Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs in the Obama administration. In the 1990s, he collaborated with Nelson Mandela on his autobiography, “Long Walk to Freedom.”
Brandon Quester is the founder, executive director and editor of the Arizona Center for Investigative Reporting, where he leads the business and editorial operations of the award-winning nonprofit newsroom. Under his leadership, AZCIR has become a regional hub for original and collaborative accountability journalism that is best known for its deep-dive, often data-driven investigative reporting that exposes injustice and systemic inequities throughout Arizona.
