Teen accused of attempted murder in shooting after Mesa Halloween party rejection

A 16-year-old boy was arrested early Saturday after a shooting outside a private Halloween party at Versalles Reception Hall in Mesa, Arizona, officials said. Jesus Figueroa opened fire after being denied entry to the event, prompting return gunfire from an off-duty police officer and security guard, resulting in Figueroa being wounded and taken into custody.

A judge set his bond at $1 million. Figueroa was shot several times during the incident and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. After being wounded, he was taken into custody by a separate on-duty Mesa police officer following his surrender.

Jesus Figueroa was booked on charges of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and two gun-related offenses, including possessing a firearm as a prohibited minor and unlawful discharge of a firearm, according to Mesa police records.

The shooting occurred around 1:05 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, outside Versalles Reception Hall, a private event venue located near East Main Street and North Lazona Drive in Mesa, Arizona, according to Mesa Police Detective Jose Aguirre. The incident unfolded during a private Halloween party. Figueroa had been denied entry to the event at the door, sources confirmed.

Following the denial, Figueroa produced a firearm and fired at a security guard stationed at the venue’s entrance, Aguirre said. The shot missed, and the security officer was not struck. Figueroa then ran toward a nearby vehicle while continuing to discharge his weapon. Both the off-duty Mesa police officer who was attending the party and the security guard pursued him and returned fire, Aguirre said.

Figueroa was hit multiple times and collapsed after crossing south across Main Street. Despite his injuries, he removed a firearm from his waistband and placed it on the ground before surrendering to the on-duty officer who had intercepted him. A man inside the vehicle Figueroa targeted was also struck by gunfire and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. Neither the off-duty officer, the security guard, nor bystanders sustained injuries during the exchange.

Detective Aguirre described the scene as “chaotic,” noting that partygoers scattered when gunfire erupted. Witness Alicia Chavez, a Mesa resident living near the reception hall, described the night as “crazy” and said she saw two men attempting to jump over her fence amid the commotion.

Because an off-duty Mesa police officer discharged a firearm during the incident, the investigation into the officer-involved shooting is being led by Scottsdale police through the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team, according to Mesa police. Mesa police are handling the underlying aggravated assault investigation. Records show this was the 37th officer-involved shooting in Maricopa County and the 66th statewide in 2026.

The police response prompted Valley Metro to temporarily suspend A Line light rail service between the Stapley/Main Street and Gilbert Road/Main Street stations.

This was not the first shooting outside Versalles Reception Hall. In January 2024, a fight between two groups in the parking lot around 1 a.m. resulted in an uninvolved bystander found shot inside his car with life-threatening injuries, according to Mesa police reports. Authorities believed the altercation spilled into the parking lot, but multiple suspects remained at large following that incident. Police have not released the identities of all involved in either shooting, the type of firearm recovered in the recent incident, or what specifically prompted the initial denial of entry to the Halloween party.
