Three dead, including brothers Damian and Christopher Sparrow, in Glendale restaurant shooting near 59th Avenue

Three people, including brothers Damian Sparrow, 17, and Christopher Sparrow, 21, were killed and five others injured Sunday evening in a shooting at El Camaron Gigante restaurant near 59th and Glendale avenues in Glendale, Arizona. The shooting, which occurred around 7:45 p.m. during a Cinco de Mayo event, stemmed from a fight between two groups inside the venue before shots were fired outside, Glendale police said.

The shooting unfolded shortly after 7:45 p.m. Sunday during a Cinco de Mayo concert and car show event at El Camaron Gigante, a seafood and steakhouse near 59th and Glendale avenues in Glendale, Arizona. Police said the venue was hosting between 200 and 300 attendees, including restaurant patrons, when a fight broke out inside between at least two groups. Multiple people were escorted outside to the parking lot, where shots were fired, according to Glendale Police Officer Moroni Mendez.

Three people were killed in the shooting, including brothers Damian Sparrow, 17, and Christopher Sparrow, 21, authorities confirmed Monday.

Five others were injured, including two women and two men between the ages of 20 and 23, as well as a 16-year-old boy who sustained the most serious injuries but is expected to recover, police said. Injuries resulted from gunfire or shrapnel, officials stated. Initial victim counts varied, with early reports estimating between three and nine people affected; the final confirmed toll was three dead and five wounded.

Glendale police described the scene as “very active” and “chaotic,” with the incident spanning multiple blocks near the intersection of 59th Avenue and Glendale Avenue. Several road closures were implemented, including southbound Glendale Avenue at 57th Drive and westbound Lamar Road at 56th Avenue, to secure the area. Grand Avenue remained open for traffic. Over 100 officers and detectives responded to the shooting, quickly establishing control of the scene.

Security personnel working at the event discharged weapons during the incident, police said, but clarified that the shooting was not classified as an officer-involved shooting. The Glendale Police Department stated the incident was isolated and involved individuals who were known to each other, according to an update issued Monday morning. No arrests had been reported as of the latest statements, and the investigation remains active.

Officer Mendez confirmed the shooting occurred near 57th Drive and Lamar Road, close to the Glendale Police Department headquarters. The restaurant, located just steps away from the police station, was open for business alongside the Cinco de Mayo event, which included a concert and car show. Calls reporting “shots fired” prompted a rapid police response to the scene.

Authorities urged the public to submit any photos or videos related to the shooting through the Glendale Police Department’s evidence submission portal. A contact number, 480-948-6377, was provided for tips. Police also held a briefing shortly after the incident to confirm fatalities and update media outlets.

The shooting disrupted the Cinco de Mayo celebrations, which drew a large crowd to the venue. According to police, the initial altercation inside the restaurant escalated, leading to the gunfire outside in the parking lot. The exact motive remains under investigation, but officials emphasized there was no broader threat to the public following the incident.

Media outlets including ABC15 and FOX10 Phoenix reported on the shooting Sunday night and Monday morning, confirming the deaths of the Sparrow brothers and the number of injured victims. Video footage from the scene showed chaotic conditions and multiple emergency responders south of Glendale and Grand avenues.

The Glendale Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities have classified the event as isolated and involving acquaintances, but no further details on suspects or motives have been released. The department’s ongoing inquiry includes reviewing evidence and witness accounts to determine the full sequence of events leading to the violence.
