Expansion of Reid Park Zoo: Tucson City Manager recommends project

TUCSON, AZ – The planned “Pathways to Asia” expansion project at Tucson’s Reid Park Zoo took another step towards a reality on Tuesday.

That’s because Tucson City Manager Michael Ortega recommended that the expansion plan be forwarded to Mayor Regina Romero and the city council.

The latter will convene and discuss the expansion project at its meeting on May 4th, the city said.

The recommendation includes relocating the expansion project from its original location to part of the park northwest of the zoo.

The results come after receiving more than 14,000 responses to eight proposed actions related to the Midtown Zoo expansion project. The public was asked to rank eight scenarios in order of preference.

Option D, which tried to preserve the existing duck pond and hills near the facility, was the top-rated response in the survey, the city said.

The expansion project is also creating a new master plan for the facility, replacing the one created in 2018, the city said.
